Grant Funds Compassionate Care Conversations

Through the generosity of the Northeast Michigan Community Foundation Urgent Needs Fund, a $3,940 grant was awarded to the Ascension St. Joseph Foundation to support the purchase of Samsung Galaxy Tablets, protective covers and tray table stands to facilitate video calls connecting COVID-19 and other  patients with their families to receive emotional and spiritual support.

In addition to the NEMCF grant, the Foundation received generous donations from other supporters including Cliff & Kristi Miller, Charles & Nancy Andrina, Robert & Newana Visser, Gary & Mary Jo Rehberg and the Oscoda Lions Club. Thank you for making the difference in the lives of our patients during this difficult time!

Tablets have been distributed across our units so that patients who are unable to have visitors due to Coronavirus restrictions can have important face-to-face conversations with their families as they fight this virus in complete isolation.

In this unprecedented situation, there are patients who are in the last stages of life, away from loved ones where nurses bear both the privilege and the weight of being the only support present for end-of-life. Without the usual physical presence of family to say goodbye, this tablet technology allows us to bridge the gap and ease the burden of this traumatic situation for everyone - patients, families and nurses to receive critically needed compassionate communication and strength.
